1998 MERCEDES-BENZ SLK230 2D CONVERTIBLE KOMPRESSOR
Deposit Received – Pending Completion of Sale
The second half of the 1990s saw Mercedes-Benz return to a segment it had not occupied since the 190SL – the compact two-seat roadster. The result was the R170 SLK, a car that combined classic proportions with contemporary engineering and, most notably, the revolutionary folding steel “Vario-Roof”. Designed under the direction of Bruno Sacco, the SLK was compact, purposeful and unmistakably Mercedes-Benz.

This 1998 Mercedes-Benz SLK230 Kompressor (R170) was built in March 1998 and complied in May 1998, and is finished in Zircon Silver Metallic with the desirable LEATHER QUARTZ interior (225A) – a striking two-tone combination of Black and Light Grey. The contrast works beautifully with the silver exterior and gives the cabin a light, period-correct feel that is far less common than monotone interiors.

Delivered new on the 18th of May 1998 by Mercedes-Benz of Sydney, this car is accompanied by its original purchase certificate and invoice showing a new vehicle price of $107,378 – a substantial sum at the time and a reminder of how premium these cars were positioned.

It was first owned by a Doctor on Sydney’s Upper North Shore in Turramurra, where it remained until 2016, before passing to its second owner in the Dural Hills District of Sydney. Importantly, it has travelled a genuine 57,000 kilometres from new and still retains its original number plates issued at delivery — a rare and appealing detail that further reinforces its authenticity and provenance.

Servicing was carried out by Mercedes-Benz up until 2016 at 36,352km, with subsequent maintenance performed by an independent mechanic. It is accompanied by:

• Original purchase certificate and invoice
• Original Mercedes-Benz folder
• Factory books and manuals
• Three keys

In terms of presentation, this SLK is exceptionally well preserved. The paintwork retains excellent depth and gloss, the body presents clean and straight, and even the factory alloy wheels present almost as new — a detail rarely seen on an R170 of this age.

The LEATHER QUARTZ interior remains in outstanding condition, with minimal wear consistent with its low mileage. The two-tone trim, switchgear, carpets and soft-touch surfaces all present beautifully and reflect careful long-term ownership.

The folding steel Vario-Roof operates exactly as it should. Importantly, it has recently been inspected by a Mercedes-Benz specialist, who rebuilt one of the rear roof hydraulic rams due to a minor leak — a common age-related issue on these cars. This has now been properly rectified, and the roof functions smoothly and correctly.

Mechanically, the SLK230 is powered by the proven 2.3-litre supercharged (Kompressor) four-cylinder engine producing 142kW, delivering strong mid-range torque and effortless performance for its size. The compact R170 chassis remains engaging and well balanced, offering a genuine analogue driving experience that is increasingly appreciated by enthusiasts.

Examples of this quality, with low verified mileage, documented provenance, original plates and factory paperwork, are becoming increasingly difficult to source. This is a highly original, unmodified Australian-delivered SLK that will appeal equally to collectors and buyers seeking a properly preserved modern classic.

1999 MERCEDES-BENZ SLK230 2D CONVERTIBLE KOMPRESSOR
The second half of the 1990s saw two trends emerge which significantly altered the automotive scene: firstly, the rise of the SUV as a passenger car alternative; and secondly the reappearance of the compact roadster. In the final few years of the twentieth century, cashed-up sports car fans were treated to the arrival of a flurry of desirable new two-seater roadsters – most notably the Porsche Boxster, the BMW Z3 and the Mercedes-Benz SLK. The SLK was designed by Daimler’s legendary chief stylist Bruno Sacco, and was a salute to the classic 190SL of the 1950s…even sharing the earlier car’s 2,400mm wheelbase. The badge was also derived from naming conventions first used by Mercedes many decades before: Sportlich (sporting)…Leicht (lightweight)…Kurz (short wheelbase). Unique to the SLK amongst this new brat-pack of roadsters was its folding steel vario-roof, enabling it to transform in seconds from a convertible to a hard-top coupé.

This unspoiled and highly original R170 SLK230 Kompressor was built in September 1999 and complied in February 2000, it has had just one local owner from new, has covered just 144,145km, and is finished in Obsidian Black with a two-tone leather interior. Delivered new by Sandersons Easturn Suburbs of Rushcutters Bay in March 2000, the car comes with the original manuals, factory literature, service log book and 3 original keys. The car was serviced exclusively by Sandertsons up until 44,419kms and from there by Autohaus One one of Sydney's leading Mercedes-Benz specialists and there is also a large file of reciepts for all wok done since 2010. Features include cruise control, leather steering wheel, carbon fibre trim, original radio, and dual zone air-conditioning. This car has the proven and reliable 142kW 2.3L Kompressor (supercharged) engine and can sprint to 100km/h in just 6.9 seconds. The R107 series SLK is rapidly becoming sought-after by collectors and enthusiasts for its timeless good looks, and this example with its low mileage and original unmolested condition will please the discerning buyer.
