The second half of the 1990s saw two trends emerge which significantly altered the automotive scene: firstly, the rise of the SUV as a passenger car alternative; and secondly the reappearance of the compact roadster. In the final few years of the twentieth century, cashed-up sports car fans were treated to the arrival of a flurry of desirable new two-seater roadsters – most notably the Porsche Boxster, the BMW Z3 and the Mercedes-Benz SLK. The SLK was designed by Daimler’s legendary chief stylist Bruno Sacco, and was a salute to the classic 190SL of the 1950s…even sharing the earlier car’s 2,400mm wheelbase. The badge was also derived from naming conventions first used by Mercedes many decades before: Sportlich (sporting)…Leicht (lightweight)…Kurz (short wheelbase). Unique to the SLK amongst this new brat-pack of roadsters was its folding steel vario-roof, enabling it to transform in seconds from a convertible to a hard-top coupé.
This unspoiled and highly original R170 SLK230 Kompressor was built in September 1999 and complied in February 2000, it has had just one local owner from new, has covered just 144,145km, and is finished in Obsidian Black with a two-tone leather interior.
