The P38A (or ‘LP’ as it was referred to internally at Land Rover) was the second generation of the legendary Range Rover line, and represented a significant leap forward over its “Classic” predecessor in terms of styling, refinement, cabin ergonomics, off-road capability, safety and technology. It was code-named after the building in which its engineering development took place at Land Rover headquarters in Solihull, England – Block P38A.
This unique example of the P38A line was built in February 1997 before being transferred to the Special Vehicles division at the Solihull plant for finishing to Autobiography specification. The Autobiography was the top-of-the-line then as it remains now, and was so named for the ability of the new owner to “write your own story” with a number of special paint and interior finishes reserved to facilitate a level of personalisation not available in lesser variants. Autobiography versions are exceptionally rare, and represent just 3% of total P38A production. This vehicle was completed at the Special Vehicles division on 17 March 1997, and left the factory finished in White Gold with “Lightstone” beige leather interior, the latter complemented by special Autobiography burgundy leather seat inserts. The leather is set-off by lustrous burr walnut timber trim used extensively throughout the cabin, which includes a special “Autobiography” monogram in the centre console. Subsequently Australian-complied in June 1997, this impressive example was delivered by Barbagallo Land Rover at Osborne Park in Perth to its new owner in South Perth in August 1997 and has covered just 173,784km since. The low mileage is supported by an excellent and up-to-date service history including a number of receipts, with the vehicle having been meticulously maintained in recent years by a leading Land Rover specialist. It is set apart from most other P38As currently offered not simply because it is an Autobiography, but because of its remarkable original condition inside and out. Aside from the special Autobiography touches such as the timber steering wheel, special leather/trim and the signature Campagnolo-style 5-spoke alloy wheels, the car features an impressive specification for the time including electric front seats (driver’s with memory), electric sunroof, climate control, Harman/Kardon 10-speaker sound system, CD stacker, ABS braking, electronic traction control and more. Naturally there are also the trademark Land Rover capability features of electronically-controlled air suspension and a low-range transmission, the latter accessed through the H-pattern gate on the gear lever. The self-levelling air suspension (with selectable drive modes) works perfectly and the car requires no spend in order to be enjoyed for many years into the future. It is powered by the refined and reliable 4.6L injected V8 engine, coupled with a 4-speed ZF automatic transmission sending power to all four wheels. The engine develops 157kW of power and 358Nm of torque, and responds as crisply to the throttle as it did when new. Included are the original owner’s wallet, two keys, and all the original manuals and service log book. We highly recommend this strikingly well-kept example of the P38A to the Range Rover enthusiast, or to anyone seeking an affordable entry point into this legendary brand. Its rarity and condition ensure that it will remain a highly collectible car well into the future, and it represents an appreciating investment in classic British luxury. Registration in NSW is until 26/12/2022.
