Mercedes-Benz unveiled the W123 series “compact” in late 1975 and the first examples reached Australian shores in late ’76 for the ’77 model year. The series ran right through until 1986, and it quickly established itself as the standard-setter for mid-size luxury sedans globally. It replaced the previous W114 series and in total some 2.7 million units were produced, making it the most popular Mercedes-Benz range ever made and it is now a model increasingly sought-after by collectors today. Designed by legendary in-house stylist Bruno Sacco, the W123 picked up design cues from its larger W116 S-Class sibling and presented a very modern face in the mid-1970s. In particular the interior design was a revelation, and still looks remarkably contemporary today. The 230E with its new M102 engine featuring a Bosch K-Jetronic fuel-injection system was launched locally in 1981 as a replacement for the carburettor 230 with the M115 engine, with significant increases in power, torque and refinement. It quickly became the volume seller of the 123 range, to a large extent bridging the gap that previously existed between the 230 and the range-topping 6-cylinder 280E. This extraordinary Australian-complied 230E dates from 1984, and was delivered new to the NSW Regional Office of Mercedes-Benz Australia by McCallums Mercedes-Benz of Strathfield on 5 February 1985. It is finished in sparkling Classic White with a dark blue MB-Tex interior, and was subsequently retailed for the first time soon after with just a few thousand kilometres on the odometer to a gentleman who owned it right through until 2018. Astonishingly, this extremely original and well-maintained example has covered just 74,569km, with the odometer reading supported by a log book history from new. Without a doubt this is one of the most original and well-preserved W123 compacts we have been fortunate enough to offer, and it comes complete with all its factory literature, owner's wallet, radio instruction booklet, two keys and service log book. Everything about this car functions as it should – from the air-conditioning, through to the central locking and sliding steel sunroof. The original Becker Grand Prix radio/cassette remains in place, as does the factory first-aid kit in its parcel shelf cubby box. Whilst the plates themselves have been renewed, the car even still bears its original NSW registration: NBW-285. Setting off the like-new interior is beautifully preserved zebrano timber trim on the dash and centre console, which became standard on the "Third Series" of the W123 from the 1983 model year. The 2.3L 92kW injected 4 performs strongly and more than keeps pace with modern day city traffic, and the 4-speed automatic transmission provides crisp and smooth gear changes. Sitting on its original factory-fitted 14-inch "Baroque" (also often known as "Bundt") alloy wheels, this good-looking and extraordinarily low mileage 230E turns heads wherever it goes and represents a wonderful opportunity for the canny enthusiast/investor. Trends here and overseas strongly suggest this model is headed for modern-classic status, and we believe this highly original example will not disappoint the fussiest buyer. Registration in NSW is until late March 2022.
