Mercedes-Benz unveiled the W123 series “compact” in late 1975 and the first examples reached Australian shores in late ’76 for the ’77 model year. The series ran right through until 1986, and it quickly established itself as the standard-setter for mid-size luxury sedans globally. It replaced the previous W114 series and in total some 2.7 million units were produced, making it the most popular Mercedes-Benz range ever made and it is now a model increasingly sought-after by collectors today. Designed by legendary in-house stylist Bruno Sacco, the W123 picked up design cues from its larger W116 S-Class sibling and presented a very modern face in the mid-1970s. In particular the interior design was a revelation, and still looks remarkably contemporary today. Interestingly, Mercedes-Benz has recently returned to the “eyeball” air vent design for many of its current models - a feature that was very much a hallmark of the 123 dash. The 230E with its new M102 engine featuring a Bosch K-Jetronic fuel-injection system was launched locally in 1981 as a replacement for the carburettor 230 with the M115 engine, with significant increases in power, torque and refinement. It quickly became the volume seller of the 123 range, to a large extent bridging the gap that previously existed between the 230 and the range-topping 6-cylinder 280E.
This sparkling Australian-complied 230E dates from 1984, and is finished in Diamond Blue with a cream beige MB-Tex interior, and presents in excellent original condition. It comes complete with its factory literature, two keys, owner's wallet and service log book documenting its very low 169,449km. Everything about this car functions as it should – from the air-conditioning, the original Becker Europa factory radio/cassette, through to the central locking and sliding electric steel sunroof. This particular car was optioned with windcreen wipers on the headlight a very rare option in Australia and they look great. The 2.3L 92kW injected 4 performs strongly and more than keeps pace with modern day city traffic, and the 4-speed automatic transmission provides crisp and smooth gear changes. Sitting on its original 14-inch steel wheels with colour-keyed chromed hubcaps, this good-looking 230E turns heads wherever it goes and represents a wonderful opportunity for the canny enthusiast/investor. Trends here and overseas strongly suggest this model is headed for modern-classic status in the coming years, and we believe this original example will not fail to please the Mercedes enthusiast.
