The two-door Mercedes-Benz W111 coupé and convertible first appeared in 1962, their clean and elegant lines having been designed by Frenchman Paul Bracq. Initially offered in 220SE guise – with a 2.2L inline 6-cylinder engine – these timelessly beautiful models sat immediately below the more upmarket 300SE (or W112, sharing the same bodywork) at the top of the marque’s passenger car range. In 1965 the 220SE was superseded by the 250SE, which introduced the new and larger 2.5L M129 inline 6 developing 148 horsepower (112kW) and capable of a 188km/h top speed. In total, just 5,259 examples of the 250SE coupé were built during its currency from 1965 until late 1967, with the majority of these in left-hand drive form for the home market and the United States. It was replaced by the 280SE, which remained until the end of the W111 coupé/cabriolet line in 1971. Inspection can be arranged by appointment.
We are very proud to offer this stunning and exceptionally well-preserved example of the 250SE coupé series. Finished in White (050) with a dark blue leather interior, this particular coupé was built in right-hand drive form to Australian specification in 1967 and delivered to a Surfers Paradise owner on 21 August, 1967 by Grand Motors at Southport. It comes complete with all its original books, service log, manuals and paperwork including the warranty card for the factory-fitted Becker Grand Prix push-button radio and the original sales brochure. The odometer records a mileage of 74,113 miles, and the vehicle has been in the hands of a Victorian collector who has maintained it impeccably for a number of years. Quite simply this is a breathtaking car, with the quality, originality and condition of every aspect being second-to-none. The interior features the original factory-fitted Behr under-dash air-conditioning system (itself a very rare option in 1967, and still working perfectly), period-correct lap seatbelts, and a well-presented boot with an unblemished rubber mat and the original Michelin spare. The dash is finished in lustrous and undamaged timber, which includes the instrument binnacle and all the trim around the base of the windscreen and the A-pillars. The leather is still supple and totally original, showcasing the sumptuous box-pleating which so typified Mercedes trim of the era. This 250SE also drives superbly, with crisp response from the willing inline 6 and silky-smooth changes from the 4-speed column shift automatic transmission. The exterior is set-off by the original painted steel wheels bearing the correct centre hubcaps and separate outer chrome dress-rings, and finished off with whitewall tyres. We would encourage any serious Mercedes-Benz collector to make an appointment with us to view this unique and original W111 coupé as soon as possible, as recent sales both here and overseas indicate that this car is already a rapidly-appreciating and highly-desirable classic.
