Mercedes-Benz unveiled the W/V126 series S-Class at the dawn of the 1980s, and it quickly established itself as the standard-setter for large luxury sedans globally. It was designed to build on the huge success of its W/V116 predecessor, and it remains the most popular of all the generations to carry the venerated S-Class designation. The coupé version of the 126 series (C126) was launched shortly after the sedans and like them was designed in-house by legendary stylist Bruno Sacco. It was intended to be a grand tourer in the time-honoured tradition, and provided enviable space, comfort, safety and exclusivity for its time.
This excellent Australian-complied example from 1983 is finished in stunning Champagne Metallic 473 with a mocha soft leather interior. Delivered new to a Surfers Paradise owner by Lanes Motors of of Melbourne, it comes complete with all its factory literature and a very comprehensive service log book documenting its 252,603km including a full folder of receipts for the last 20 years. Its in very original condition other than the edition of a very nice wood grain steering wheel and gear knob, the interior presents in excellent condition with the wood slighty faded over the past 39 years and the dash has just a cuple of very minor cracks up at the windscreen. Everything about this car functions as it should – from the ice-cold air-conditioning, electric windows, sunroof, and cruise control through to the original Becker Grand Prix sound system and the electrically-adjustable front seats. The 3.8L V8 performs strongly, and the automatic transmission provides crisp and smooth gear changes. Sitting on its original factory-fitted “Bundt” 14-inch alloy wheels, this 380SEC turns heads wherever it goes and represents a wonderful opportunity for the canny enthusiast/investor as this model seems certain to be headed for modern classic status in the coming years. It had been stored for around 5 years by a collector in the ACT and is now up for sale along with a couple of other very nice examples.
