The third and final generation of the highly successful Mercedes-Benz SLK series was the R172, launched in 2011 and continuing through until 2020. In 2016 it received a mid-life update and was renamed the SLC to bring it into line with Mercedes' new naming conventions. As with both previous SLK generations the R172's stand-out feature was its folding steel vario-roof, which enabled the car to turn from hard-top coupe to roadster at the press of a switch in a matter of seconds. The R172 was styled to echo the legendary SLS AMG which appeared around the same time, and picks up design cues from the big gullwing's nose, tail and interior layout. In Australia the R172 was initially offered in just two forms: the 4-cylinder SLK200 and the V6 SLK350.
