Mercedes-Benz unveiled the W/V126 series S-Class at the dawn of the 1980s, and it quickly established itself as the standard-setter for large luxury sedans globally. It was designed to build on the huge success of its W/V116 predecessor, and it remains the most popular of all the generations to carry the venerated S-Class designation. The coupé version of the 126 series (C126) was launched shortly after the sedans and like them was designed in-house by legendary stylist Bruno Sacco. It was intended to be a grand tourer in the time-honoured tradition, and provided enviable space, comfort, safety and exclusivity for its time. Up until the 1986 mid-series update the 380SEC was the top of the C126 range in Australia, but this honour was then bestowed on the awe-inspiring 560SEC through to the end of the 126 line in 1991. The 560 in coupé form became a statement of power, style and wealth the world over in the late 1980s, and was chosen by a dazzling range of rich and famous people as their preferred personal transport. Indeed, acclaimed actor/director/producer Clint Eastwood acquired his at the time and continues to drive it around the streets of his hometown Carmel, California to this day. This excellent Australian-complied example was built in late 1989 and is finished in stunning Midnight Blue with an Orion grey soft leather interior, and is one of the most original and well-preserved C126s we have ever been fortunate enough to see. Delivered new to a Sydney CBD-based private equity firm in early 1990 by Mercedes-Benz of Sydney, it comes complete with all its factory literature, spare keys and a service log book documenting its 290,970km. The car presents like one which has covered a fraction of this mileage, and has been doted on throughout its life. The service history indicates that it was cared for exclusively by the selling dealer right up until 98,077km, and thereafter by reputable specialists. Everything about this car functions as it should – from the ice-cold air-conditioning, electric windows, sunroof, and cruise control through to the original Becker Mexico sound system and the electrically-adjustable front seats. The first-aid kit remains in its parcel shelf recess, and even the original swing tags for the cruise and climate control remain with the vehicle. The 5.6L V8 performs strongly, and the automatic transmission provides crisp and smooth gear changes. Sitting on its original factory-fitted 15-inch alloy wheels, this impressive 560SEC turns heads wherever it goes and represents a wonderful opportunity for the canny enthusiast/investor as this model is without doubt headed for modern classic status in the coming years. It is made more desirable by the fact it is a post-1989 update build, and therefore features the driver airbag, improved seats and a number of other features which set it apart from the 1986 to 1988 cars. It will not disappoint the fussiest buyer and we look forward to showing you this remarkable example of a very rare and desirable Mercedes coupé.
