Mercedes-Benz unveiled the W123 series “compact” in late 1975 and the first examples reached Australian shores in late ’76 for the ’77 model year. The series ran right through until 1986, and it quickly established itself as the standard-setter for mid-size luxury sedans globally. It replaced the previous W114 series and in total some 2.7 million units were produced, making it the most popular Mercedes-Benz range ever made and it is now a model increasingly sought-after by collectors today. Designed by legendary in-house stylist Bruno Sacco, the W123 picked up design cues from its larger W116 S-Class sibling and presented a very modern face in the mid-1970s.
