The second half of the 1990s saw two trends emerge which significantly altered the automotive scene: firstly, the rise of the SUV as a passenger car alternative; and secondly the reappearance of the compact roadster. The BMW Z3 was launched in 1995 and ran through until 2002, with a mid-life refresh appearing for 1999. Designed by Japanese stylist Joji Nagashima, the Z3 was made famous by its starring role in the 1996 James Bond film 'GoldenEye' alongside Pierce Brosnan. Based on the E36-series BMW 3-series, the Z3 was offered in both 4-cylinder and straight 6-cylinder forms with the latter distinguished by twin tailpipes.
